Jack Johnson on Stage.

Jack Johnson on the big stage. The first song he played was what I consider the best on the whole album. 'You and Your Heart." Here is a link to the video. Check it out:

I have to say this was an awesome show. I saw him in 2008 but I have to say I really liked this show even better. (My pictures and report are on my blog in the archives)
I have become a huge fan of Jack's music. He has a great fan vibe. The people are very cool and have a great time tailgating. All of his music makes me want to dance. I have too much fun going to his shows. And not only does he make great music but he gives back to the world in a great way and he honestly gives a damn about the world. If you missed the news he gave the entire proceeds of the 2010 tour to CHARITY. Non-profits...and he smiles all the time. Wonder why? Think about it. If you ask me he has the makings of the next Jimmy Buffett in terms of draw in the big sheds if there is such a thing in this day and time.

So that is my report from this show. I have so many pictures of Jack but I don't want to endlessly put them up here. This one just gives you a feel of the show I hope. I had a freakin' blast. I will be back.

See ya down the road...

Zach Gill!

Zach Gill. He is an awesome player. I have tons of great pictures of him some from three feet. I liked this one. (click on the picture to enlarge it) It sort of captures a moment and reminds me of a new Jack Johnson song. "Pictures of people taking Pictures of People"

Pictures of people taking
Pictures of people taking
Pictures of people taking pictures

I pictured us at the end of time
Holding up a camera to our eyes
I took a picture of you took a picture of me
In the background of the picture
Was water running to the sea

So I pictured us standing there
Staying away from time
Watching it like a river
As it slowly washes by

And now
Pictures of people taking

Walnut Creek.

I shot this picture as I walked to my seat at an intermission. Walnut Creek is not my favorite outdoor venue but I can say I have had some wonderful times here. From the days of several years of three Jimmy Buffett shows in a row to the Allman Brothers Band. I can't even remember all the shows I have seen here. It is a good thing I have ticket stubs and a blog.

I just liked this.

A video back drop for G Love. I just liked it. So here it is.

G Love on Stage...Peace. Love, and Happiness...

I really like this guy. Anyone this young who plays the blues like he does gets added to my favorite list. This set did rock! Nice job G Love! It was not my first time to see him and it won't be my last.

Volunteers.
This is what you see when you come to a Jack Johnson show as you walk in. They are everywhere. It is like a game you are playing to get your card stamped from the non-profit booths so you can have a chance to win a pair of on the stage tickets. At the last show I watched Jack draw the winner out of the box. A cool concept.

Zach, Jack, and G Love!

Zach Gill, Jack Johnson, G Love. Let me tell you this one one very cool set. As always I have to be right on the stage. It's just my thing.

Jack Johnson...Yeah. On the Small Stage.

http://jackjohnsonmusic.com/home
After a few beers and some really good fresh jalapeno poppers off a charcoal grill from a guy I just met my daughter Alex and I went into the venue for the Jack Johnson Show. Hot Summer night. Raleigh. A young crowd.

As we walk into the non-profit tent area where jack is trying to change the world in his way we walk right up to the stage where he is playing the pre-show to the lucky ones who have found him. At the last show I went to in 2008 I bumped into him out here in the same way. He is really a cool performer and he is making a difference in the world with his non-profit work.

Stevie Ray Vaughn. It's been Twenty Years...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevie_Ray_Vaughan

Twenty years ago. I remember the day. I had a friend I had made back in the 1980's. His name was William O. Rolands. Everyone called him Bill. He worked for a supplier in Boston and I had helped him even score a job at another supplier in Wisconsin. He was from Waukesha, Wisconsin and this was close to home. We had grown up worlds apart but somehow over many nights, business meetings, and a few beers we somehow became fast friends. Bill was a very likable guy and we always had fun no matter what town we were in and back then we were traveling hard and having a great time from Boston to the mid-west. I can remember several great nights on the river in Cincinnati and at the No Name restaurant in Boston but that is a whole 'nother story. I won't mention the night at Howl at the Moon and a long cab ride to the north side of Cincinnati.

Anyway. Bill got a job at great company in Mukwonago, Wisconsin and I was proud to say I gave him a stellar reference for a company that had tried to even hire me. I had been there several times and it was a cool place. Bill was happy and had even recently married a cool girl who was an ace accountant. His life was going great. I had just seen him on a trip and we shared a meal and traded some stories. He knew I loved music and asked me about what I was listening to. I told him about what I considered to be two major players at that time. Robert Cray and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He nodded his head and said send me a tape so I can hear this stuff. I said ok, I will.
After I got home I dug out a recent Stevie Ray Vaughn bootleg and made Bill a cassette tape. Now remember this was 1990. CD's were not really being recorded on a big scale. But I had a state of the art cassette machine, the Nakamichi CR7A. In fact I still have it. So I made him a tape.
On the morning of August 27,1990 I stopped by the Brown Summit, North Carolina post office and saw the Postmaster who was a woman and a friend of mine. Now Brown Summit is a very small place. In fact it is a rail road crossing really. But the post office was small and kind of quiet. My kind of place. Slow pace, quiet, and the operator speaks Southernese. Yeah. I still miss that lady. She has retired.
I dropped the cassette into her hands and paid the buck or so postage. It was addressed to my friend Bill in Wisconsin. Stevie Ray jamming on a live bootleg. It would be Bill's first initiation into SRV blues and his incredible talent.

I went on into work that morning just two miles down the road. Later that afternoon I got a call. It was Bill. Bill said I have bad news for you. I thought. Oh no another business problem. No he said. I am in Mukwonago. I was just listening to the local radio. They are saying Stevie Ray, Robert Cray, and Eric Clapton are dead from a helicopter crash near Alpine Valley. I held my breath. Anyone who knows me will know I love EC, Stevie, and Robert Cray.

Later that day I found out after listening to national radio reports that Robert Cray and Eric Clapton were ok. Stevie Ray was not. I could not believe it.

Now I do. A week later I was on my way to Charlotte on a business trip alone. I was listening to Stevie on tape play some tunes and thinking about what had been lost that night. I am not afraid to say my eyes teared up for about ten miles. I still love his music that much. He was an incredible talent that will be forever missed. I will leave it at that.

Bill did get his cassette later that week and he called to say that he really loved the music. We were great friends and I will always remember the times we had together. He died later that year suddenly of bone cancer. He was a few years younger than me. He left a new wife and a huge amount of friends. I was one of them.

So anyway... today is one to remember for SRV and Bill Rolands.

See you down the road.

Thanks for the Show!

Pictures ©2010 Andrew Talbert

Let's wrap this report. The show was great. Sheryl and the band are working very hard. The tour is a grind! Look at the schedule! You all need a break!

I loved the set list. It was a nice mix of new and old. The new album is one that hits a chord with me so they could have just played that and I would have been happy. But a few of the hits were nice too.

The band is awesome and the sound was great. As the show ended and we waited for an encore I made a strange observation. Maybe it was just this crowd, I dunno. But, there were no lighters or cell phones being held up. My lone iPhone with the zippo lighter was the only one seen and soon I thought maybe I should just not do this as I am not being hip when no one understands. I smiled. Oh well.

The couple beside me were talking and I interjected that I was looking forward to the next three songs. They asked if I had any ideas what they would play. I said "I Want You Back" and "I Shall Believe." She played them. And they were GREAT.

Most of you know Sheryl sang backup vocals for Michael Jackson on tour. Some of you remember Sheryl singing backup for Jimmy Buffett on tour as well. She plays to the Michael Jackson thing on this song. It was very cool.

I hope you enjoy them. I enjoyed the show. A couple of concerts are coming very quick! Stand by for more reports! Until next time, I'll see you. Down the Road...

Oh..by the way. She played it.

Sheryl. Another One.

Yeah I like this picture. There are so many I took on that night just days ago. I had been looking forward to this show for a while. So now it is over and I am still enjoying the memory of the whole experience.

Here are a couple of nice links to some of my favorite Sheryl videos and songs:

I used to play this one on radiomargaritaville.

Sheryl.

1640 pictures, I can't share them all here. I just liked this picture. So here it is.

The Horns...

Great Stuff...

What a Great Band!

Yeah they rocked!

The Band did Rock!

Nice job on the drums.

Doyle Bramhall II.

http://www.doylebramhall2nd.com/

Yeah man, you rock! I have seen Doyle play with Clapton on tour and many of his friends are legends. He is large part of the genius behind the latest cd from Sheryl. Go check out the Arc Angels. I'll leave that alone. Let's just say I am hoping to get to see that band perform.

Doyle was very low key on stage but so damn good. Hell this whole band was smoking!

Thanks Doyle. Great show. Nice guitars too. The left handed thing always blows my mind. You play it well.

Sheryl Crow Takes the Stage in Cary!

http://www.sherylcrow.com/

Sheryl at the keyboards for the opening song. The new album is one of her best ever. Her fall tour schedule is very intense. She is barely taking a break in between cities. You can read all that stuff I don't need to tell you.

Sheryl sounds great in the August heat and humidity. This is tough on a singer and I know it. As I traveled to the venue the temperature went up 10 degrees from the Piedmont to down east in the capitol city. It was hot! As Sheryl said "It is like 3000 degrees tonight!" Yes it was, in more ways than one.

Here is a great video from a recent David Letterman appearance if you want a feel of this band and the concert:

More Colbie.

http://www.answers.com/topic/colbie-caillat-1
This article will give you all kinds of information on Colbie. She is doing very well in the music business. She must be taking a lesson from her father Ken. He is the guy who produced Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" album and later the "Tusk" album. Not bad at all. That is how you get to live in Malibu.

Nice job on the opening show Colbie! I enjoyed it. Hmm. I really wonder if somewhere there is a lonely stock broker wishing you were painting his picture...

Here are a couple of videos if you want to listen a bit, they are good ones:

Colbie Caillat!

http://www.colbiecaillat.com/

Colbie opening the show for Sheryl Crow. She has some cool music! The Grammy Award winning artist is fun to watch and hear.

Before the show there was a retired investment broker sitting beside me. We were talking about all kinds of things and he suddenly asks if I have seen Colbie before. I said no. He starts telling me all about her and the fact he is here to see HER. In fact from his conversation it seemed he was really into her music and great looks. Later as Sheryl took the stage he left after maybe five songs. I smiled.
Yeah her dress was very short and those cowboy boots did look great. Nice smile Colbie!

Back to the Booth Amphitheatre!

http://www.boothamphitheatre.com/ (you can click on the pictures to enlarge them)

Back at the amphitheatre, yeah that's what they call it and that's how they spell it...in Cary, North Carolina. Of course I have always said Cary stands for "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees."
OK so it is Raleigh. Call it what you want. They have great shows, it is a fabulous venue, and I always have awesome conversations with nice people I have never met before at every show. This place is really beautiful as it sits in a wooded area and at night the frogs sing as loud as the music after the show from the adjacent water.

I should take this moment to remind Al Bunetta that I told him about this place. A few years back I was discussing hiring John Prine for a benefit concert in Cary. Al says "We'll never fill the place. Too Big, I gotta' run." Two months later he sold the place out. He must have picked the phone up and called as soon as I hung up. 'Nuff said. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Pajamas_Records

Richie Hayward. Thanks for the Music.

The photo. My drum sticks. They are the Richie Hayward ones. I will keep them to remember a great drummer by. I won't recite the history of Richie's career, that is all over the internet. We lost him today. I miss him already. Little Feat is one of those bands that I will love like I have for most of my life, all the way back to the early 1970's.. Luckily I have had the chance to meet them all several times and enjoy some awesome shows. That is what living is to me. "Nuff said.

I know Richie lived well for many years and played with the best. Not too many people can say that. Sail on Richie. My motto is "Live now, like there is no tomorrow."

Here is an update from the Little Feat site: I love the Frank Zappa story.
