Another Cool Ilo Ferreira Story...

As I took this picture I had been bumping into Ilo from stage to stage all over Key West. I had already had many conversations with him all the way from his Buffett Shellback guitar story to what he had been doing lately on late night talk shows. Just before he went on stage with Little Feat I asked him what he as going to sing. His reply in his African accent was "I am going to sing Dixie Chicken." I thought, this guy is living huh?

In the picture above which I captured as Ilo played with Little Feat at the Casa Marina in Key West, you can see the expression on his face as he sings. Keep that image in mind as you read the following article about how Ilo was discovered by Jimmy Buffett and some of his music business friends. I had heard this same story from another close source so I knew it was true when I read it. 'Nuff said. It is a cool story.

http://nymag.com/news/intelligencer/62371/?imw=Y&f=most-emailed-24h5#ixzz0YEvXFyCV

I am going to paste this article in in case the link goes away. This was written by Matt McCue and published in the New York Magazine on November 27, 2009.

Tom Freston, the 64-year-old MTV co-founder and former Viacom honcho, has among his hobbies these days the career development of a 30-year-old African singer named Ilo Ferreira, who goes by Ilo. On November 23, Freston and his friend Jimmy Buffett, 62, were there to support Ilo at his sold-out show at Joe’s Pub and his appearance later that night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, which they’d helped engineer.

“Hopefully, lightning strikes and he gets a musical career,” says Freston. “We’re just trying to give him some exposure.”

How’d they get to know, and fund, him? “It was an amazing set of circumstances,” Buffett says backstage at Joe’s. “Freston gets fired and he doesn’t have his plane and he’s got me all fired up to go to the Festival in the Desert,” in Africa. So they have to take Buffett’s jet. The route to Mali “is from San Juan to Cape Verde,” where they stopped to refuel. Buffett thought, why not check out the local music scene while they were stopping through. “I went, ‘Let’s see if Cesaria Evora is playing; I’ve always been a fan.’”

Also with them was MTV Networks editorial director Bill Flanagan, 54. That night, the Cape Verde culture ministry hosted for Buffett and his traveling companions to showcase performances by the best local musicians, including Ilo. After seeing him play, they all “just looked at each other and said, ‘Man.’ I mean, you see a lot of people, but very few people you think have it,” says Buffett. The next day, they invited Ilo to lunch at Sodade, an empty upstairs restaurant, along with their traveling companion Chris Blackwell, 72, the man who discovered Bob Marley and today owns a production company, who’d skipped the dinner. “I said to him, ‘You need to go see this kid and tell us,’ ” says Freston. (Though when they approached Ilo, he’d never heard of any of them—even Buffett—though he’d heard of MTV: That got him excited.)

“When listening to music in a bar at midnight, you can think that something is the greatest thing in the world. Then, in the cold light of day, it isn’t,” says Flanagan. “Before we start flipping out over this guy, let’s invite him to bring his guitar and play us some songs at noon in the sunlight and see if he is as good as we thought.” Following lunch, “he started playing, and Chris says, ‘He’s really got it.’”

Afterward, Buffett suggested they give him a chance to record an album in America. (Because of his MTV job, Flanagan recused himself from further involvement.) Eight months later, in September, Buffett flew Ilo to Massachusetts to play with him and the Coral Reefer Band, in front of 60,000 people at Gillette Stadium. He’s been sitting in with the group ever since. Blackwell, also a financial supporter of Ilo’s development, said take him on tour, “feature him while he works on his career,” says Buffett. “I’ve seen him at club level. I’ve seen him with an acoustic guitar. Chicks love him.”

Ilo, whose sound is an upbeat mix of influences from Paul Simon to Elvis, with some African rhythms thrown in, will soon leave Buffett’s tour to play his own dates. “Jimmy is a shortcut I didn’t see coming,” Ilo says, happily. On Fallon, he sang “Let Me Love You,” which he’d played for his visitors in Cape Verde. “But I had it in my mind where I wanted to go. The way I write my songs, I was thinking about the world, not locally. I was making my plans to get there, but Jimmy just made things happen”—he snaps his fingers—“from day to night.”

John Frinzi's New CD Shoreline...

http://www.johnfrinzi.com/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1CF8FkCs9c

Here is a link to John's new video from his latest cd. I will go on record as saying it is the best cd yet from John. You will see from the video that Tom Corcoran http://www.tomcorcoran.net/ not only took all the pictures but also co-wrote some of the songs. John's long-time friend Doyle Grisham is on pedal steel as well as Mike Utley http://www.margaritaville.com/utley.mv on Hammond B3 organ. With a team like this behind you the product has to be good. There just is no other option!

You can drop by my house to hear the cd or just download it at the link below. I made Tom sign mine as he was the one who sold the cd to me in Key West. Since I have been an occasional Frinzi roadie I didn't ask him to sign this one....my bad....I enjoy signed music media.

http://www.digstation.com/albumdetails.aspx?albumID=ALB000038061

You can buy the cd at CD Baby if you like. It actually sold out and they had to call for more stock!
http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/JohnFrinzi

Go watch the video, Tom's pictures are awesome as always from the guy who does Jimmy Buffett's calendar every year, not to mention all of those Buffett album covers. John is sounding his best ever I think and I am proud to call all these guys friends. Awesome.

Scott Bryan

http://www.rscottbryan.com/

I was sitting next to the stage talking to Scott about iphones and stuff. John Frinzi came on the stage for his gig and said "I want to invite Scott to the stage for a song."

He said "I wonder what I should play?" I said "Stormy Monday." He played it. I loved it. Scott does it all...vocals, percussion, guitar...did I mention Key West is the real deal?

My favorite bar right after the Green Parrot.

Bikes....

Did I mention I like this bike? I hung out for several days with the guy who designed this one.

Jim Hoehn at Blue Heaven.

Ok so I am a fan of the man. Jim has some cool songs and I always make sure I see him at Blue Heaven. His music is cool and he is a very good Americana dj too. 'Nuff said.

Sunny Jim at Blue Heaven....

The tradition continues....Sunday at Blue Heaven with Sunny Jim and friends...he has been jamming here for many years. This is always a place to be on Sunday after MOTM ends. I over-exposed this photo image of James up on the water tower playing. I would like to see someone paint this one.

Blue Heaven....

So I traveled over to Blue Heaven for some music....man the house is full as always on Sunday...

Caroline Street....

Just another picture as I turned a corner. This is one of my favorite streets in Key West for obvious reasons.

Weather's got the shrimpers in a frenzy
They're horny and don't need a good excuse
Someone yells and things just start erupting
And in a flash all hell has broken loose

There's a woman goin' crazy on Caroline Street
Stoppin' every man that she does meet
Sayin' if you'll be gentle if you'll be sweet
I'll show you my place on Caroline Street

Jim Morris.....

It is a Key West MOTM tradition. Jim Morris on Sunday morning. I took this picture just a few feet from Shrimpboat sound.

Sunday Morning...Shrimpboat Sound...

Shrimpboat Sound, Key West, it is Sunday morning. I was cruising on my scooter around town picking up a few things for some special people enjoying the quiet of a Sunday morning in Key West. What a Saturday night it was, what a week!

There have been some very cool recordings in this old ice house. The last Little Feat cd, many Buffett albums, it goes on and on. Just another building, the artists make it happen. It is kind of cool to look at this place and imagine all the stuff that has happened here. Last year at this time I was having a glass of wine with Russ Kunkle and thinking about the days when I loved to listen to the new Nicolette album. I can never say my life has been dull. Yes, yes. Life is good.

FEAT FEAT FEAT...

Little Feat. Yes you rock.

This was the lineup after the encore. Having Little Feat in Key West was a great way to headline another fabulous Meeting of the Minds.

Missing from this lineup was drummer Ritchie Hayward. Ritchie is suffering from some health issues and had to give the drumming reins to Gabe Ford. http://www.littlefeat.net/index.php?page=news&n_id=614 Gabe did a great job on stage.

As for Ritchie everyone can help support him through online sites that have been setup. His wife Shauna is even selling her wedding gown on ebay. If everyone who reads this contributes even a little it will go a long way. So visit the links below and keep Richie in your thoughts.

Sam

Everybody loves Sam. "Nuff said.

Kenny

Billy.

Billy Payne. http://www.littlefeat.net/index.php?page=biobp
From the late 1970's I remember watching Billy on keyboards and just wondering how someone could be that great. He rocks. He was all smiles on stage. It is good to survive and feel success.

I remember this song the month it was released...I have always loved it.

Well they say time loves a hero
but only time will tell
If he's real, he's a legend from heaven
If he ain't he was sent here from hell

Hear me well
Seein' ain't always believin'
Just make sure it's the truth that you're seein'
Eyes sometimes lie, eyes sometimes lie
They can be real deceivin'

I got an Uncle in Puerto Rico
Spends his days in the sun
his nights in the casinos
He left the States many years ago
Took a fishin' boat to Puerto Rico
Now my aunt, she is sad and lonely
She'll never know that she drove him away
As a coward I admire his courageous ways

Well they say time loves a hero
but only time will tell
If he's real, he's a legend from heaven
If he ain't he was sent here from hell

Some say my uncle, that he's a zero
His life is as a shell, he left it back at Stateside
I'd say he's doin' pretty well, without his shell
Bumming 'round the beaches of Puerto Rico

The beauty of the sunrise and sunset
To his friends he wish he could tell
They're at home still runnin' for bells
Better San Juan than that blue collar hell

Well they say time loves a hero
but only time will tell
If he's real, he's a legend from heaven
If he ain't he was sent here from hell

Paul

OK I am a fan of all these guys. I had my 1978 ticket stub printed on my custom t-shirt just for this show. Paul rocks. I am not sure what I can add other than pictures. You know the rest. http://www.paulandfred.com/

Nice guys. I like them like I always have....in fact the very first post on this blog was a Little Feat show where I took pictures with a cardboard camera and spent some time on the big red tour bus watching a Dodgers game on the big tv. These folks are all very nice down to earth people.

Fred

http://www.littlefeat.net/index.php?page=bioft

This was the first picture I took when Little Feat took the stage. Earlier that morning I saw Fred headed to the stage, so I escorted him to the backstage area and I talked to him for a while. I have always been a fan. He is so capable on so many instruments. Horns to strings, he can do it all. Fred rocks.

Steve...

My friend Steve Huntington on stage as he introduced Little Feat. I know from my conversations over time this is not the first time he has done this. What an honor. FEAT rocks.

Nick Ohl.

Nick is a cool guy who takes care of all the FEAT guitars and the band in general. He is a really nice guy and one of those people you enjoy hanging out with for a while.
I was talking with Nick in the morning as he re-strung some guitars and I asked him about the two sockets Paul was using for slides. I was curious as to why he did that given all the choices for artists to play slide guitar with. Nick told me that tradition goes all the way back to the Lowell George days. I liked that. Tradition is good.

Mac, Lulu, Andrew.

I really love this picture. Next up, Little Feat. Life is good.

People like this keep the music coming and MOTM humming.
What a smooth Meeting of the Minds 2009! Great music and a great time!

You can never have too many friends. "Nuff said.

Sunny Jim

Did I mention....

OK so I fixed Sam Clayton's iphone voicemail. I told him he had to take a picture with me for the favor. He laughed and said ok now my wife can call me...life goes on.

Not only am I a 30 plus year fan of these guys I also saw Sam play with Jimmy back in the 1980's as a Coral Reefer so I guess I feel kind of like a friend.

Sam rocks. I have other stories I would rather tell in person.

http://www.littlefeat.net/index.php?page=biosc

OK so I love guitars....

The FEAT arsenal. This is a fine collection of Leo Fender's best effort....

Little Feat is in town....

It's the Sauce Boss.....

http://www.sauceboss.com/

All I can say is I was there. At the Green Parrot http://www.greenparrot.com/ which is my favorite Key West bar. On the front feeling the heat of the gumbo pot with a bunch of my friends from all over. Life just never gets better. Bill Wharton always rocks.

Howard Livingston.

http://www.milemarker24.com/

All I can say is great show. Great crowd. Excellent execution from the stage crew. A very nice day in paradise.

At the Street fest.....

Cool huh?

The Street Fest...

Duval is full of Parrotheads. What a scene. We are looking over Jerry's shoulder.

http://www.jerrydiaz.com/

Tim and Donna....

Tim Glancey and his wife bringing the balloons. If you have ever been to a Buffett concert you know the carnival comes to town. This is the guy who started all of that. He lives in Key West and he has lived the whole thing. Did I see Alex Leist in the background?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/13/AR2006011301265.html

Yeah I want one....

http://www.conchcruiserbikes.com/

I really like this bike. The rasta cruiser.....check it out. I looked at this one all week behind the stage. They are very reasonably priced....I took this photo on Duval Street in front of Margaritaville. Nothing like locking your bike to a palm tree. Hmmm..I need that lifestyle.

Ilo Ferreira...

Ilo. http://www.youtube.com/iloferreiramusic#p/f/0/lyiyBUXoMAc

What a cool guy. Ilo was all over the place playing on all of the stages. We were talking at the street fest and I asked him about his guitar. I looked inside to see which number it was. As I was looking he told me it was number 10. He offered to hand it to me but I said no. You can go back to my earlier post for more details on this guitar but it was very cool to check it out in person. I almost bought one of these myself back when they initially sold the production lot. Now they are rather scarce and the prices have gotten crazy.

You can buy Ilo's EP of five songs on itunes right now. I am listening to those songs as I write this. Look for his cd on mailboat records in 2010.

That Fisherman song is really in my head. Oh ley ley ley...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zPjlaU05JA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIr75WYHo6o

More Doyle!

I had my "More Doyle" button on. Doyle is so low key he told me "I had nothing to do with that!" I thought yeah and that is the point....he rocks.

http://www.margaritaville.com/grisham.mv

The Coral Reefer Band....

There is not much to say. I have tons of photos of this show. They rocked. It was great!

I will say this show brought back memories as I stood there. I have a Club Trini album poster in my studio fully autographed from so long ago....1996 to be exact. I remember so many shows where I heard and even sang "Love is made of this." They played it on this night. It was a moment.

http://www.amazon.com/Trini-Michael-Utley-Robert-Greenidge/dp/B000005HSM

Did I mention that the last time I saw Bobby G. it was 3 AM and he had a 6 AM flight to St. Barts? It was fun. Yes sleep is very over-rated in Key West.

Coral Reefers Taking the Stage....

Almost show time!

Jimmy Parrish!

http://www.jimmyparrishonline.com/

Jimmy Parrish rocking the crowd at the Casa. Great stuff!

Hmmm...

OK so I slipped off a hundred feet to the portable bathroom on the beach. I have never been in a portable six hole, wood grained, air-conditioned port-o-john with music? On the beach? Are you kidding me? This is living!

JL's T-shirt

http://www.bridgeschool.org/events/index.php

JL Jamison and the back of his t-shirt from the Bridge School Gala. When you get to travel with Jimmy Buffett all over the planet you get cool t-shirts! This show was held just a week or so before I took this photo at the Coral Reefer sound check. Two days later JL was in St. Barts with Jimmy. Did I mention JL does a great job as a stage manager?

Coral Reefer Sound Check

Mr. Utley, Nadirah, and JL Jamison from the back of the stage during the sound check. There is nothing like a mix of Coral Reefer band members and Key West to make a Buffett fan feel good.

Jersey Boyz Party....

Jim Morris, Sunny Jim White, John Frinzi

The annual Jersey Boyz party. It was windy, you could smell the salt water in the air, and the beverages were flowing. All for charity, it was a good thing.

http://www.paradisefoundation.org/

PS go buy that Live from Key West cd. My name is in very small print inside the cover.

Jim Hoehn

http://www.jimhoehn.com/

Jim Hoehn. I stopped for a moment to get someone to snap this shot of Jim and I. Jim is one of my favorites when I come to Key West. We both had shows on radiomargaritaville once upon a time, he is quite a character, and very genuine. I always enjoy watching him play and listening to his stories. Go buy his new cd, it is number 24 on the European Americana CD rankings. Jim rocks.

http://www.myspace.com/jimhoehn

An Early Morning Stage Shot

Just one of my early morning stage shots as I walked out to see how the crew was doing on the setup. Man it is always nice to wake up in key West.

Encore!

Ok so I am posting the black strat photo...go buy the new Peter Mayer cd. It is very good, very original, and you will enjoy it.

http://www.littleflockmusic.com/product.asp?ID=PM-GH-CD

Peter jumps off the stage...

Here is a shot of the closing several songs. Peter loves to jump into the front row and play a medley of songs as he closes the show. I was good with it as always. I was freakin' two feet from him watching his amazing guitar playing! It was an awesome show.

I took hundreds of photos on this night. One I didn't post was a shot of Peter playing his black Fender Stratocaster. I talked to him later about that guitar. He told me it is a collection of many parts that I frankly love to hear scream. What a guitar!

My favorite song of the night? One of the ones on the black strat.
"I feel fine" It rocked! We all loved it.

Baby's good to me you know,
She's happy as can be you know,
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
Baby says she's mine you know,
She tells me all the time you know,
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
I'm so glad that she's my little girl
She's so glad, she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things you know.
He buys her diamond rings you know,
She said so
She's in love with me and I feel fine,
Baby says she's mine you know,
She tells me all the time you know,
She said so...

Nadirah and Peter

Nadirah on stage with Peter. The thing that struck me was she had lyrics with her to follow the song. She made a comment that she was not alive when the Beatles were in their heyday. Uh, it's official, I am feeling old.

http://www.margaritaville.com/index.php?page=shakoor

Tina and Peter

http://www.tinag.com/
http://www.margaritaville.com/gullickson.mv

Fresh off a plane from California Tina had just made it to the venue in time to sing a couple of songs. It was very good to see her.

R. Scott Bryan

http://www.rscottbryan.com/
One of the nicest guys playing music these days, Scott Bryan is verry good on the percussion. I talked to Scott later about this performance and he was telling me about some of the complexity involved with keeping time with strings and all the stuff happening at this show. It was a very tight performance. I really liked the arrangements of all the songs. More on Scott a bit later. Did I mention he plays some awesome guitar and also sings? Yes, yes he does it all.

Jim Mayer

http://unclejimrocks.com/
http://www.littleflockmusic.com/artist.asp?artist=jmayer
http://www.margaritaville.com/mayerj.mv

Jim was awesome on bass. He has some very cool guitars. I should mention Jim not only plays on the new cd but also for those two of you who don't know he is the bass guitarist for Jimmy Buffett these days. One of the coolest things I like about Jim is his work with JD Souther, What an amazing album. http://jdsouther.net/ Folks this was one amazing night of bass playing. Yes it was.

Goodbye Hello...the cd release party.

http://www.littleflockmusic.com/product.asp?ID=PM-GH-CD http://www.petermayer.com/

As you can see from this photo I was rather close to the stage. This venue was very cool. http://www.tskw.org/ You can browse their site for more details but I will just say I love places like this. A non-profit place staffed with volunteers who care. It was awesome to be in the house with people like this and music fans who traveled many miles to see two sold-out shows. The whole show was verrrry good. The venue, the fans, the music, and I was sitting on the front row. Are you kidding me? Life is good about now.

While I am posting my pictures I want to rant for just a moment. I have seen web sites that are taking photos from this blog and posting them on the internet. I want to say that first I consider all of my material copyrighted and my blog is a registered trademark. I want you to understand that you should not post any of my pictures or stories without my permission. My email address is on the header of my blog and it comes to my phone. I am very easy to contact. As for taking pictures from here for your own use I am ok with that. If you put them somewhere on the net or print them you need to ask permission. "Nuff said.
